In the April edition of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, an article was published regarding the possibility that vegetarians may be at higher risk for easting disorders! The aim was to put vegetarianism under the spot light as a possible suspect for eating disorders … Physicians and dietitians, look out!

“The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Minnesota, the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University and the University of Texas used surveys to learn about the diets, weights and eating habits of 2,516 Minnesotans, ages 15 to 23. They discovered that vegetarians are more likely to binge eat and lose control of their eating than non-vegetarians.” Tara Bannow, Mndaily.com

However, the article pointed out that vegetarians lead a healthier eating pattern with respect to their fruit and vegetable food intake. The research also points out that

“Vegetarians are at a decreased risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and some cancers.” – Tara Bannow, Mndaily.com

Researchers pointed out that balance is key! Do your homework and research a healthy and balanced diet before you go vegan or vegetarian.
